Woman disarms gun-toting robber, rapist

November 13, 2005

A gun-toting would-be rapist in St Ann was no match for his intended female victim, who disarmed him and sent him running for cover.

Just before dawn on Friday morning, a woman from Great Pond, Ocho Rios was reportedly walking along the Great Pond main road when she was held up by a lone gunman, who was riding a bicycle.

Police report that the gunman robbed the woman of an undetermined sum of money, a cellular phone, and then proceeded to drag the woman into nearby bushes, apparently intent on raping her.
But the woman, who other sources say is skilled in martial arts, fought off her attacker, relieving him of the firearm, a Beretta .380 pistol.

The frightened man, in a bid to ward off his victim-turned-attacker, then drew a knife and slashed the woman in the face before running off.

A passing motorist who saw the woman at the side of the road bleeding, took her to the St Ann's Bay hospital where she was treated and released.

Constable Stacy Hawkins, the Constabulary Communciation Network liaison for St Ann, told the Sunday Observer that the firearm, with registration number 9333, was handed over to the St Ann's Bay police at around 5:30 am Friday. The police were unable to confirm that the victim was indeed a martial arts expert.

The Ocho Rios CIB is investigating.
