Accused in murder of Finnish man gets bail

CLARK'S TOWN, Trelawny - The alleged male accomplice of the St Thomas woman who is charged with the murder of her Finnish husband in Trelawny last month was Monday granted bail after they both appeared in the Clark's Town Resident Magistrate's Court.

The man, Marvin Stewart, 30, a carpenter of Lyssons, St Thomas, is jointly charged with Melody Baugh-Pellinen, a 24 year-old bar operator, also of Lyssons, with murder and conspiracy to murder.

Stewart, who was granted bail in the sum of $500,000 with one or two sureties, following an application from his lawyer Ronald Coates, was asked to surrender his travel documents and report to the Morant Bay Police Station on Mondays and Thursdays between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm.

Baugh-Pellinen was, however, remanded in custody. Her attorney, George Soutar, who did not apply for bail on her behalf, said he did not have enough time to peruse statements and other documents presented to the court which were collected by investigators who returned to the island from Finland Sunday night.

Baugh-Pellinen's husband, Timo Pellinen, 57, a medical doctor from Helsinki, Finland, was shot and killed on the Harmony Hall main road Trelawny on the night of October 1, while she was driving him to Ocho Rios, St Ann from the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay.

The Crown's allegations are that Baugh-Pellinen had picked up her husband at the airport and was taking him to a hotel in Ocho Rios. When she pulled over on a soft shoulder another car, which was travelling behind hers, bumped into her car. She got out to inspect her car, as did the male driver of the other car, and they both agreed that no major damage had been done....
