THREE STUDENTS are now in the custody of the St. James police after they were found in possession of ammunition on their way to school along St. James Street in Montego Bay, yesterday.
The police said they were acting on information received from members of the public who spotted the students, one female and two males aged 13, 14 and 17 years, before they boarded a bus.
Reports reaching The Gleaner are that at about 9:00 a.m., the bus was intercepted and the students were searched. The young girl, aged 13, was found with two 12-gauge cartridges and the 17-year-old was found in possession of one 12-gauge cartridge.
The 14-year-old boy was found with three .22 cartridges stitched into a Flankers Primary and Junior High school tie he was wearing.
"The female student attends the Muschett Comprehensive High School in Trelawny, while the boys attend Cedric Titus High (also in Trelawny ) and the Flankers Primary and Junior High in St. James. They all live in Barrett Town, St. James," Inspector Alwyn Brown told The Gleaner yesterday.
"We acted on the cooperation of the public who saw them and called us and told us that they had the rounds," Inspector Brown added. "We have to wonder as well, why they were so late for school which starts at 7:00 a.m. As to our knowledge, the institutions operate on a shift system."
