Man accused of defrauding 30 people on $500,000 bail

WAYNE Downie, who is facing more than 30 counts of obtaining money by means of false pretences, was yesterday granted bail in the sum of $500,000 when he appeared in the Half-Way-Tree Resident Magistrate's Court.

He was ordered to return to court on Friday when he is expected to furnish monies to at least half of the persons he allegedly defrauded.

Downie, a functionary of Global Leaders Consulting Associates Company, an overseas employment agency located at 78 Slipe Road, Kingston 4, was also ordered to submit his travel documents, and to report to the Cross Roads Police Station between the hours of 8:00 am and 8:00 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Downie is alleged to have taken money from more than 30 persons with the promise of being able to secure employment for them in the United States via his company. He was arrested earlier this month after one of the persons who allegedly paid Downie $30,000, but received no definite word on work arrangements, made a report to the police.
