Former financial controller facing fraud charge

MAURICE Gabay, former chief financial controller of Magil Construction Jamaica Limited, is facing criminal charges in the Half-Way-Tree Resident Magistrate's Court, after allegedly defrauding the company of $3 million. Gabay is facing charges of forgery, uttering forged cheques, larceny as a servant and attempting to obtain money under false pretences.

Trial is scheduled to begin on November 21.
According to court documents, on December 10, 2004, Gabay allegedly forged the signature of Joseph Gustadt on a company cheque valued at $3 million, payable to a Mr Dennis Arscott.

It was also alleged that Gabay ordered a quantity of goods using the company name and some time thereafter diverted the goods to a building site not connected to Magil. The value of the goods allegedly ordered by Gabay, the documents stated, totalled $600,000.
