Dabdoub to introduce bill for political parties
May 12, 2006
A bill to make provision for the registration and funding of political parties, is to be introduced in Parliament by Abe Dabdoub, (JLP) MP for St Catherine North Eastern.
Dabdoub, who gave notice of it in the House on Wednesday, said there was no requirement in law for accountability by political parties for the funding they receive, whether by way of membership fees, donation or otherwise.
He said the bill would therefore seek to make provision in law for political parties to file accounts, donation reports and other particulars in relation to their receipts and expenditures, and to ensure, in so far as is possible, that the funding of political parties and political activities was derived only from legitimate sources.
In addition, the bill would provide for political parties to be accountable for campaign funding for elections and referendums, as well as for public inspection of all donation reports, accounts and other documents filed with the proposed electoral commission....
