MoBay taxi driver facing sex abuse charge

May 19, 2006

MONTEGO BAY, St James - A Montego Bay taxi driver charged with sexually abusing his former girlfriend who was visiting the island, was this week denied bail when he appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court.

The court was told that the accused, Paul Bennett, went to the woman's hotel room at about 2:00 am on April 23 and allegedly forced her to perform oral sex, while holding a knife to her neck.

The police were called but when they arrived the woman, who was visiting from Canada, decided not to press charges. However, Bennett allegedly returned to the hotel room, saying that Jamaica was his country and he was free to do what he wanted.

An alarm was raised and the police were called again. This time they arrested Bennett and charged him. Bennett will return to court on May 24.
