Man with stolen identity caught trying to defraud COK of $1.7m

A man is awaiting sentencing in the Half Way Tree Resident Magistrate's court after pleading guilty to attempting to defraud a branch of the City of Kingston Cooperative Credit Union of $1.7 million. Karl Miller, 34, of A4 Majestic Gardens, St Andrew, pleaded guilty to six counts of forgery and two counts of uttering forged documents. Miller is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday.

According to court documents, on May 31, police officers at the Half Way Tree Criminal Investigation Bureau received information that Miller was at the Half Way Tree branch of the COK credit union about to conduct a fraudulent transaction. Miller was pretending to be Dr Devon Osbourne of Spathodia Avenue, Kingston 6.

Miller, the documents stated, had presented a driver's licence to one of the staff members at the branch bearing his photograph, and a signature bearing that of Dr Osbourne, attempting to draw $1.6 million and $100,000 in two separate transactions....
