Murders still trending down

ONE hundred and four people were murdered in September, the first time since May that more than 100 people were murdered within a one-month period.
Another 100 people were also shot and injured in September, the police said yesterday.
According to statistics released by the police yesterday, 955 persons have been killed since the start of the year, a 25 per cent dip when compared to the 1,270 murders recorded over the corresponding period last year.
Among those murdered were six women, three children and one police officer. At the same time, 11 people were fatally shot by the police and another by a licensed firearm holder.
Fifteen of the September murders were recorded as gang-related, seven were the results of domestic disputes, 38 were listed as being related to other criminal acts, while the police did not establish a motive for the remaining 44 cases.
In the meantime, serious crimes such as robberies, break-ins and carnal abuse were also down by 30 per cent, 56 per cent and five per cent respectively in September, compared to the same period last year....
