Man held in connection with bus robbery

October 23, 2006

The St. Catherine South Police have now taken a man in custody whom they believe was involved in holding up a bus in Portmore, which resulted in the death of the driver and one of the gunmen while injuring two other persons.

Reports reaching The Gleaner are that about 8:00 p.m. on Friday, two men posing as passengers took a Hiace minibus at the terminus in Spanish Town.

Along the Edgewater main road, the men brandished hand guns and held both driver and conductor at gun point. One of the gunmen hit the driver on the head with his gun and he lost control of the vehicle. The bus slammed into a parked truck, killing the driver and one of the gunmen.

The dead gunman was subsequently identified as Andrew Bailey of a Clarendon address while the identity of the driver has not yet been established.

The injured passengers were taken to the Kingston Public Hospital after the other gunman had made good his escape.

On Saturday morning, the police received a tip that a man was seeking medical treatment at a private facility. He was arrested and investigations are under way to ascertain whether he is one of the suspects.
