Cop facing assault charges

SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine - Constable Paul Dixon, 26, of the Trelawny Division, was arrested Tuesday on assault charges.

He appeared in the Spanish Town Criminal Court and was offered bail in the sum of $80,000.

Allegations against Dixon are that on December 23, 2004, he was on duty at the intersection of Young Street and Beckford Street in Spanish Town, St Catherine, when he signalled a motorist to stop. He requested the motorist's documents and an argument reportedly developed.

It is alleged that during the argument the motorist used the vehicle to hit the cop to the ground. The man allegedly reversed the car and drove it down on the policeman again.
The cop pulled his gun from his waist and fired a shot through the windscreen of the car, which hit the motorist in the neck.

The matter was reported to the Bureau of Special Investigations (BSI). The BSI collected statements and submitted the completed file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for his directions....
