Big ganja busts in Corporate Area

January 25, 2007

Fifteen persons were taken into custody yesterday after narcotics police seized 5,000 lb of compressed ganja and more than J$2 million at two locations in the Corporate Area.

According to reports, the narcotics police, along with the Special Anti-Crime Task Force, raided 5 Langard Avenue, Kingston 13, where a 1993 white Toyota Hiace minibus loaded with 46 white knitted bags was seized. The knitted bags were said to be the size of regular feed bags and contained 4,200 lb of compressed ganja. A bag containing 90 lb of hash oil was also seized, along with cash totalling $2,239,000. Six persons were taken into custody for further questioning.

As a result of that raid, police were led to a location at 14 Lindsay Crescent, Kingston 10, where they seized a 2006 Dodge Sprinter with eight knitted bags containing 800 lb of compressed ganja. Cash totalling just over J$51,000 and US$1,000 (J$67,000) was also seized and nine persons taken into custody.

Police also said a customs seal was found at the second location.
