27-y-o gets six months for ganja

Donovan Beharrie, a 27-year-old student at the University of the West Indies, has been jailed for six months for attempting to export ganja from the island.

Beharrie, who is a second- year chemistry student, was about to board a flight last week for the Eastern Caribbean when he was searched. Ganja weighing four pounds was found strapped to his body.

Resident Magistrate Frank Williams sentenced Beharrie after he pleaded guilty in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

Beharrie was fined $5,400 or three months' imprisonment for possession of ganja and $12,800 or six months' imprisonment for dealing in ganja. He was sentenced to six months' imprisonment for taking steps preparatory to export ganja and also fined $25,000 or six months' imprisonment.
