Hinds appeals ban

Wavell Hinds, Jamaica's senior cricket captain, has appealed his year-end ban, according to an Observer source close to the player. Hinds, 30, lodged an official appeal to the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) last Friday, through an attorney-at-law, said the source, and will have his appeal heard at the next JCA board meeting slated for August 21.
The Jamaica skipper was found guilty of breaching the JCA disciplinary code during a Super Cup match on June 23-24 and was subsequently suspended for the remainder of the year from all competitions under the auspices of the JCA.
During the June 23-24 game involving the Hinds-led Kensington Cricket Club and Trelawny Parish at Kensington Park, Hinds allegedly verbally abused the officials.
An official complaint was later filed by on-field umpires, Errington Malcolm and Desmond Edwards.
Then on Friday, July 27, the Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Justice Howard Cooke and including attorneys Jeffrey Mordecai and Dr Lloyd Barnett; former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Tony Irons; and chaplain of the Jamaica Cricket Association, Rev Selvin Watson, Hinds was found guilty of the infringement.
The ban, if upheld by the JCA, could significantly affect the stuttering career of the left-handed batsman, who last represented the West Indies in the triangular One-Day International series against Australia in India in November, 2006.
And also with the regional cricket season tentatively set to begin later this year (October), Hinds would be ineligible for selection to the national team until next January.
