Political parties back ombudsman law

August 16, 2007

Parliamentarians from across the political divide have thrown their support behind legislation giving citizens an avenue to complain against the actions of the state and its agencies.

Government and opposition legislators said they were in full agreement with the Ombudsman Bill which would pave the way for the Governor-General to appoint the island's first ombudsman on the recommendation of the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.

"It is just logical to say that the establishment of that office in Grenada will be the greatest contributor towards the enhancement and protection of human and civil rights," Nimrod said.

Opposition legislators said they were giving full support to the legislation but were concerned that it had taken the country so long to follow other Caribbean states in creating the important office.
