Cop accused of robbery could be released

A judge yesterday ordered that the Montego Bay police officer fingered in relation to a $90,000 robbery in the parish earlier this month be charged or released from custody by Thursday of this week.
Following on a habeas corpus application made on behalf of Constable Anthony Harris by his attorney Melrose Reid last Thursday, presiding magistrate in the return court of the Half-Way-Tree Resident Magistrate's Court, Glen Brown, made the order when the matter was called up before him yesterday.
Last Thursday, Brown turned down Reid's application on the basis that he needed to have an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Harris' detainment. However during yesterday's hearing he was told that the case file in the matter had been completed on the weekend and was subsequently sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for a ruling. Brown was also reminded that Harris, who is assigned to the Anchovy Police Station, had been in custody at the Gun Court Remand Centre since March 8, after which he made the order to have Harris charged or released by Thursday.
The circumstances of Harris' arrest were not stated in court however, it was disclosed that acting with others he allegedly held up and robbed a man of $90,000 in cash on March 8 in Montego Bay.
