Warrant issued for cop on murder charge

April 14, 2008

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a police constable accused of murder, who last Wednesday left court saying that he was going to search for his attorney but never returned.

Constable Rohan Blackwood had appeared in court for his attorney to make an application for the return of his travel documents so that he could leave the island for an overseas appointment.

The accused's attorney was, however, said to be appearing in another matter. The cop then told the court that he would go and get his attorney, but didn't return.

The warrant was stayed until July 7 when Blackwood, who is from the Hunts Bay Police Station, is set to go on trial for the murder of Richard Williams at the boat factory, Eagle Craft, along Spanish Town Road on June 8, 2000.

Three other cops - district constables Milton Ellison and Sylford Williams, and Sergeant Derrick Bailey - were also charged with murder in the same case. A warrant is still out for the arrest of Bailey, who cannot be found.
