'Charlie Wapp' caught in Cuban waters

July 03, 2008

ONE OF Jamaica's most infamous criminals, who has been on the country's most wanted list for close to nine months, is now in police custody.

Dwayne Thomas, otherwise known as 'Christopher Thomas' or 'Charlie Wapp', was wanted by the Kingston East police for absconding bail and a number of murders and shootings, especially in Rockfort, east Kingston.

Thomas was taken into custody by Cuban police authorities after he was found at sea in territorial waters last weekend, along with three other men.

Ongoing investigation

Two of the three men captured with Thomas are Jamaicans who are also wanted for a number of crimes, while the other is a Bahamian, who was processed by Cuban police and sent home.

Thomas and the other two Jamaicans were returned to the island on Monday and are being interviewed by the police. The police are, however, withholding the identities of the other two men, who are said to be from Portland.

Superintendent of police for the Kingston East Division, Assan Thompson, said Thomas' recapture is a victory for the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the wider community.

"The people in the community are overjoyed that a person like 'Charlie Wapp' is off the streets," he said.

Thompson said Charlie Wapp's arrest would also encourage other individuals with information to come forward.
